Frequently Asked Questions
1. I’m not sure I am ready for a retirement community. Shouldn’t I wait until I need to move?
The best time to make a move to any retirement community is while you are active and in good health. Residing at The Oaks will free you completely from the worries and responsibilities of maintaining your own home, so you’ll have time to do the things you always wanted to do. If you wait until you need assistance to make your move, you may miss out on the many joys of active retirement living.
2. Can I really afford to make the move?
Many people make the mistake of thinking that retirement communities are too expensive. In reality, the cost of living at The Oaks compares favorably with the cost of maintaining your own home. Many things that you pay for now, such as utilities, weekly housekeeping, home maintenance costs and property taxes, may be covered by your monthly fee
3. Do I need to sign a long term contract?
No, we have yearly contracts.
4. Is there a buy-in fee?
No, we have a one-time fee called a "community fee". It is a small deposit fee paid once on our continuum of care campus.
5. What is a continuum of care campus?
A continuum of care campus provides independent living, assisted living and nursing care as well as a full range of healthcare and supportive services on one campus. Residents benefit from an active lifestyle and gain peace of mind knowing that their future needs will be met without having to relocate outside the community.
6. Does The Oaks have a waiting list?
Yes, The Oaks has a waiting list. If planning ahead, the wait list fee will assure your priority opportunity to reserve a future apartment. The wait list applicant will be notified when their desired apartment becomes available.
7. Am I able to move from one apartment to another if I need a larger or smaller apartment at a later date?
Yes, if we have an opening you may move from one apartment to another whether it is because of size, view or any other reason. You will receive priority over someone new moving in.
8. What should I take when I move?
These are only suggestions: Take only the best of your belongings. First keep anything that means home to you. Sell what you have no attachment to or need for. Books are expensive to move and hard to store. Keep a few favorites. Over a lifetime, a variety of special pieces have no doubt been collected; these should be incorporated into the new home. Or convert a favorite chest that may have been in the guest room into a coffee table in the new living room; the benefit will be extra storage space and the enjoyment of a favorite piece. Our storage is limited and much smaller than the storage capacity of a traditional family home, so any extra objects should be sold or donated prior to the move. If you do find yourself with extra items when moving into The Oaks, inquire about storage options with us or arrange for a storage unit off-site. Because downsizing from a large home into an apartment can be a difficult task, our staff can assist with the process.
9. Will I be able to bring my car?
Yes, you can bring your car with you. We have plenty of outdoor parking available. We will even start your car and clean it off during the winter months in inclement weather.
10. Will my pet be allowed?
Yes, small pets are allowed to live in your apartments.
11. Do residence need to carry home owners insurance?
While The Oaks insures the buildings and grounds, residents will need to obtain a renter’s insurance policy to cover personal property and liability.
12. What kind of safety/medical emergency features do you offer?
Each apartment is equipped with medical emergency pulls as well as our residents receive emergency pendants to wear. Our Reception Desk is staffed 24 hours a day.
13. Can I stay over at your facility to see if it is "right" for me?
Yes, if we have a room available we would be happy to have you stay with us as our guest.
14. I think I would like to reserve my spot-what is my next step?
Please call our marketing department to request more information or arrange a personal tour! Call (315) 449-3309
