In 1910, the Reverend Moses Braude first raised his voice in the cause of a home for the elderly of Syracuse's Jewish community, but not until 1912, when an elderly man was found lying sick and helpless in a synagogue basement, was the community roused to action.
Two societies, Hochnoses Orchim (Welcoming Guests) and Linas Hatzedeck (The Friendly Inn), gave "The Jewish Home for the Aged" the backing it needed to get under way. Understanding the importance of the women of the community, the Reverend Braude also formed a Ladies' Auxiliary.
In November of 1912, an available property on Irving Avenue was found. It included an old but spacious house with 17 rooms, and could be bought immediately for $19,000. The founders and the community made the purchase, furnished the house, arranged for caretakers, and the Home opened its doors for the elderly.
In 1925, The Home moved to the current site on East Genesee Street and continued growing to meet the needs of the community. A large addition was constructed in 1929, and the following year, more land was purchased. In 1935, another addition was completed. A large modern building was built and connected the two buildings in 1959. In 1965, apartments for the elderly couples were added. The Rubenstein Pavilion, a 106 bed facility was constructed in 1975, and the Heiman Center - a multipurpose structure for rehabilitation therapy, social services and an auditorium - was completed in 1981.
In 1997, The Oaks, a 50-unit apartment building for independent individuals who desire the amenities of residential living in a safe, secure and active environment, opened its doors.
The most recent change to the campus took place in 2002, when the construction of the new Jewish Health and Rehabilitation Center, a specially-designed, three-story 132-bed facility was completed. The former Jewish Home was remodeled and now is hosting The Inn, our assistive living senior apartments.
Today, Menorah Park campus provides a wide variety of services with an emphasis on enhancing our residents' lifestyle. Our mission is to serve our Jewish older adults and the general community with a continuum of care and services - residential living, adult day service, home care and nursing care - which respects and values the worth and dignity of every person.
